Artist #2

Artist: James Casebere
Date: 1994
Title: Asylum

"James Casebere photographs the buildings that structure our social fabric, not during on-site visits to architectural structures, but rather from tabletop models he fabricates in his studio. These models, made from such featureless materials as Foamcore, museum board, plaster, and Styrofoam, remain empty of detail and human figures."

This image gives me a peaceful feeling when I first took a look at it. Even though this is a black&white image, I still can feel the warm sunlight from the window, if there is no sunlight, this image could be so cold.

I also feel loneliness since there are no people in this image. This room is special. His highlight, shadow, and dark parts are really clear.

  1. I agree, the sun in this image gives it warmth even tho it is so empty.

  2. Yes.. that warmth gives me a feeling of contemplation, spiritual refrain, rather than alienation.

  3. In much of his work he is highlighting spaces where past trauma has occurred - in this case, Asylum as a title is pretty clear. Interesting thing to consider when looking at a space that is now very calm and peaceful. I think of battle grounds in the same way - after the conflict the resume being a peaceful landscape.
